Our public schools have seen a great decline in reading and college readiness levels in recent years. Mark Bauerlein, an English professor at Emory University, is adamant that teaching the Bible in schools will make kids into better rounded students and readers. A handful of red states have proposed reintroducing biblical content into public schools with much criticism from the Left.
Bauerlein’s experience as a graduate student studying American literature with no exposure to the Bible opened his eyes to the prolific nature of the text. We encourage you to read his article in First Things titled, “Read the Bible, Understand America” where he makes the argument that the Bible is foundational to all of Western Civilization, and an integral part of history, English, civics and culture.
“The Bible is fundamental to Western civilization and American history.
To withhold it from the young is educational malpractice.”
Not only is the Bible important to set a moral standard in schools, but the readings are critical to building students’ reading skills. To understand American history, readings, and culture, Americans of all ages need to first read the Bible.
